A.W.E. – ADHD Wellness Experience

You may have heard many different opinions about what ADHD is or is not. Those opinions vary widely on a spectrum, with one extreme holding on to the view that ADHD is mainly a genetic brain condition, while the other extreme affirms that ADHD does not exist at all. We firmly believe that truth lies in the middle, and that there are natural approaches to improving and helping heal ADHD and other Neurodevelopmental challenges. To make our overall perspective clear, you can find a chart below looking at the main issues in ADHD treatment and diagnosis. On the left you will find the traditional viewpoint, and on the right you will find Dr. Lyon’s holistic and evidence-based viewpoint. The key is to keep an open mind. This information below will help you discern if you would like to pursue an initial evaluation for or your child.

Traditional Medicine’s View
Dr. Lyon’s Holistic View

A developmental behavioral disorder involving chemical imbalance in the brain.

ADHD + Other Neurodevelopmental Challenges

What happens when complex environmental forces meet with a specific genetic make-up to generate imbalances in the body and in the proper development of the brain.

Heredity makes the largest contribution to the expression of the disorder.

Role of Heredity

Heredity is the loaded gun only. It is the environment that pulls the triggers.

Based purely on symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. If child meets the diagnostic criteria, diagnosis can be made.

Symptoms are only the tip of the iceberg. Diagnosis is holistic and comprehensive (bodymind of the person, as well as its environment) to determine the underlying problems that cause the symptoms.

Medications and /or behavioural therapy.

Treatment Options

All natural approaches available, organized into a structured, step-by-step system.

Focuses on the symptoms only, either by trying to reduce them (medications) and/or by giving the patient tools to "manage" symptoms (behavioural therapy).

Highly individualized wellness care and focuses on the underlying root problems that cause the symptoms to be expressed. Also recognizes the strength and gift in "ADHD".

Rapid impact on symptoms at first. Beneficial on symptoms in mid-terms (1-2 years). No benefits in the longer (3 years and more).

Treatment Effects

Differs from one child to the next. May see rapid benefits in one child, while taking longer in another. Symptoms may increase at first as the body and brain heals. Beneficial on symptoms and overall health in the long-term.

For medications: Growth stunt, appetite suppression, sleep problems, genetic breakage, heart problems, death.

Case Management

Logical, structured, organized step-by-step action plan that integrates the best of natural approaches; tailored to the specific needs of the individual.

Impossible (treats symptoms only). Lifetime use of medication necessary.

Recovery + Healing

Possible and documented in many cases.
