So, first props to my friend, mentor, and brother in human transformation Brian Johnson for inspiring this note. He is a master synthesizer of MASSIVE amounts of wisdom – a true living philosopher. Second, props and gratitude to Jack Canfield. If anyone knows how to get stuff done and be successful on every level, it is this maverick of human potential.

So, lets get to it. To quote my boy Jack Canfield, “100 is a breeze, 99% is a bitch.” When we just commit 100% to *whatever* it is in our life that we want to evolve, improve, and connect with it is actually a breeze. Now, I am no fool and that does not mean its not a LOT of work – but it DOES mean that can be effortless. And it is that last 1% that creates the momentum of massive change. It creates the tipping point that takes us from “the bitch” of hard, *inconsistent* work to effortless consistent commitment and results. The difference that that 1% makes is incalculable.

There is something magical about that last 1%. Literally. Amazing things happen. Coincidence, serendipity, and synchronicity (which, to me, is God’s way of remaining anonymous) start to show up everywhere to help you get to the next step. WH Murray was a Scottish Explorer who wrote this (Scotts have great gumption, you know) on commitment:

“This may sound too simple, but is great in consequence. Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreampt would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:

‘Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!’ “

YES! I love that. Lets take it a step further. One of the greatest teachers of my life – and the word teacher does not even do it justice, was His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar – an immense humanitarian form India who I was blessed to be with on a number of occasions (Including driving him around Los Angeles). He said in a talk one night in Santa Monica CA that 2 things are needed for real growth in this life: 1) Intensity and; 2) Authenticity. That Intensity is the last 1%. Authenticity means we show up just as we are AND that we have a sense of humor about ourselves the whole way. We commit 100% and have great joy along the way as we move along the path of self-actualizing.

It is so much harder, and so much more painful to be 99%. It creates massive friction and incongruence in our thoughts, emotion, cells, muscles, and spines. The pain of the stories we generate to avoid the pain we create for ourselves by not giving 100% is massive.

So, great. What the heck do we do with this? Where can we apply this? Anywhere. Lets take some. “I want to meditate.” OK, great. Commit 100% to that. Commit to not missing a session for 40 days straight. Give 99% and I guarantee the day will come when you are just too busy, just too tired, just too stressed.

“I want to lose weight.” Commit 100%. I promise you this commitment will bring to your awareness great challenge, but inside you will find the “chutzpah” to persist in the face of your fear. Give 99% and it will be so hard to sustain your great journey back to health. 100% – the right people show up – maybe even a wild Charlotte, NC Chiropractor just like me to hasten your journey and help you connect to resources you never thought possible.

“I want to get out of pain.” OK – commit to yourself 100%. 100% implies that you will not only be satisfied with just “getting rid of the pain”, but that you also want to heal the problem at its source. You don’t want to put ice cubes into a boiling pot of water to cool it down, you want to take it off the burner. 99% and I can promise you I know what will happen. You’ll bail on yourself when you get comfortable again. Here is generally what will happen. The pain will come back….or worse, it won’t be the same pain, it will be a massive stress related illness or problem which is a much bigger pain that you originally had. I don’t like to use fear – what I like is reality. The reality is that 99% keeps us in a comfort zone where we go just far enough to get comfortable, but not far enough to actually confront and transform the very thing that hurts us. Our pain is not our pain. I learned this the hard way….personally.

I could go on and on and on.

Here is what I personally commit to 100%, and why I have built a life of my dreams. Its not because I am lucky, or smart, or gifted, or anything special whatsoever. What I have is 100% gumption, intensity, and authenticity. And when I don’t it hurts and then I give that part of my life to the 100% rule. For me, in my spiritual life and practices I give 100%. I give 100% to my body and move every day in some way. I feed myself living foods. I give 100% to mastering my work as a Network Spinal Analysis Chiropractor (in Charlotte NC). I give 100% to being a masterful leader and manager of my business. I give 100% to my marriage. And, I give 100% to my friendships. I give 100% to saving and mastering the energy of money. I give 100% to having fun and laughter. I give 100% to whoever is in front of me at any time, no matter what. That doesn’t mean I talk forever or even have much to say, but that person KNOWS that they have my 100% – Whether it if my first patient on Monday or my very last on Thursday night after a rockin’ busy week. I give 100% to being a passionate, creative artist as a healer.

What is one area of your life you can start giving 100%?
